HOLLYWOOD, CA — Fans tuning in to NBC’s highly anticipated Wicked: One Wonderful Night TV special were left puzzled — and a bit disappointed — when actor Jonathan Bailey, who plays Prince Fiyero in the upcoming Wicked films, was noticeably absent from the live celebration.
While co-stars Ariana Grande (Glinda) and Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) delivered show-stopping performances, Bailey was missing from both the red carpet and the on-stage lineup. The question quickly spread online: Where was Fiyero?
According to production insiders, the reason is simple — a scheduling conflict. The television special was filmed at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles in late September, during the same period Bailey was in London for another project. Despite efforts by both his team and the studio to adjust travel dates, it proved impossible for the actor to attend the live taping.
However, Bailey’s absence wasn’t a snub. Producers confirmed that he pre-recorded a short message and segment for inclusion in the broadcast, ensuring that his presence — and his role in the Wicked story — was still part of the night’s celebration.
Sources close to the production emphasized that there was no tension between Bailey and the studio. “Jonathan’s completely committed to Wicked,” one insider said. “He just had a prior engagement overseas that couldn’t be moved.”
Fans, nonetheless, expressed their disappointment online. Social media lit up with comments noting that Bailey’s chemistry with Grande and Erivo — showcased in early trailers and promotional footage — was one of the things they were most looking forward to seeing live.
Bailey, best known for his acclaimed work on Bridgerton and Fellow Travelers, has become one of Hollywood’s busiest stars. Between international filming schedules, press tours, and promotional duties, his calendar has been tightly packed leading up to the release of Wicked: Part Two – For Good in 2026.
So, while the night was filled with green sparkles, powerhouse vocals, and Broadway-level performances, one thing was missing — the charming prince of Oz himself.
The good news? Jonathan Bailey will be front and center when the Wicked sequel hits theaters next year. Until then, fans will just have to wait a little longer to see Fiyero dance through life once again.
