Observe your nails to detect health issues

What Your Nails Can Reveal About Your Health

Dermatologists say changes in nail color, shape, or texture can be early warning signs of serious health conditions. If you notice the following, seek medical care promptly.

1. Nail Color Changes

Unusual colors may signal underlying illness:

  • Pale or white nails: anemia, heart, kidney, or liver disease

  • Yellow nails: thyroid issues, lung disease, or fungal infection

  • Blue nails: low oxygen levels linked to heart or lung disease

  • Dark streaks or spots: possible melanoma — requires immediate evaluation

  • Red nails: heart disease, kidney problems, psoriasis, or lupus

Any persistent or unexplained color change should be checked by a doctor.

2. Nail Shape Abnormalities

Changes in shape can indicate systemic conditions:

  • Spoon-shaped nails (concave): iron-deficiency anemia or heart disease

  • Clubbing (rounded, swollen fingertips): heart, lung, digestive disorders, or chronic infections

3. Texture Changes

Healthy nails are smooth and firm. Watch for:

  • Brittle or breaking nails: thyroid disorders or nutrient deficiencies

  • Nail pitting: often linked to psoriasis

  • Ridges or fragility: deficiencies in iron, B vitamins, zinc, or magnesium

Take Nail Changes Seriously

Your nails can reflect what’s happening inside your body. Persistent changes in color, shape, or texture should never be ignored. Early medical evaluation can lead to timely treatment and prevent complications.
